Astrid, Elli and Isabella go camping together like they used to. But it's not just because Elli has cancer that nothing is the same anymore.
Austria 2025, Written & directed by Pia Hierzegger, Length: 94 minutes
DA: Pia Hierzegger, Ursula Strauss, Diana Amft, Josef Hader and others.
In late summer, three not-so-young Austrian women, or rather "old women", drive to a sparsely frequented and poorly maintained campsite in a rickety red station wagon, as they have done every year since they shared a flat. The sound of Lene Lovich's and Nina Hagen's scratchy voices is a reminder of the trio's age. The three women are bound together by a familiarity that has grown over many years. They have become a little estranged from each other through all kinds of frustrations in life: midlife crises and menopause in around-50-coming-out-of-age mode. They are not movie heroines, but simply normal women whose lives are not going the way they want them to. All three have reason to be a little disgruntled, which brings the mood among the women into line with the desolation of the empty campsite and the grumpy demeanor of its caretaker. And all three are stuck until the blatantly reactionary German permanent camper Christian is hit by a branch and one of the women takes a hidden tin of gold coins from his caravan.
