Édith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich met in New York in 1947. The young, seemingly untamable, sassy chansonette from Paris moved her audience to tears with her voice and, in the process, captivated Marlene Dietrich as well. This tall blonde—already a global star—with her Prussian virtues, her men, and her women. They quickly become best friends, bound by a great love.
After Dietrich’s death, a yellowed little note was found on her nightstand—one she had apparently always carried with her. On it, Piaf had written: “Never forget that I love you!”
These two women are the anchor around which a vast world of chanson revolves, spanning biographies across two world wars. Figures such as Jean Cocteau, Bruno Coquatrix, and Ernest Hemingway orbit these two luminaries. We encounter them in Paris, Berlin, New York, and all over the world.
It is an evening full of stories, anecdotes, eyewitness accounts, and above all, music: famous and lesser-known chansons by Édith Piaf, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Aznavour, Yves Montand, and Charles Trenet.
