Cello & Bach—Inspiring & Moving

Prof. Andreas Greger interprets and presents Johann Sebastian Bach’s suites for cello. They are among the most beautiful suites ever composed for this instrument. These particular suites, in fact, were forgotten for 150 years.

Were they too out of step with the times? After all, the Baroque spirit of the times reflected a backward-looking era. Were they not emotional enough for people back then? Were Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert more down-to-earth, emotionally expressive, and individualistic? And anyway, the importance of emotion in music! To put it boldly: what’s wrong with an emotional-conceptual characterization of the solo suites? Suite No. 1, the “Famous One”; Suite No. 2, the “Melancholic One,” the “Laughing One”; No. 3?

There are clear indications—at least in terms of the keys that characterize each suite, namely G major, D minor, and C major. Let’s discover Bach’s music together with a desire for emotional expression, beyond the certainties of performance practice.
