Light trapping of moths with entomologist Volker Wachlin

When dusk begins and most animals retire for the night, they emerge: the butterflies of the night. Of the 1,000 or so butterfly species found in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, around 900 are moths. These can be attracted with the help of a light trap. You will be amazed at how magnificent many of these moths, often disparaged as moths, are. Provided the weather is warm, mild and dry, the nature park hopes to attract these moths and peepers, owls and hawkmoths. Entomologist Volker Wachlin from Greifswald will be on hand to help identify the species. From 9 p.m., as dusk falls, anyone interested is cordially invited to come to the Hertha Lake in the Hohe Holz near Teterow. Please register at the nature park on 0385 588 64 830 or by email: info-msk@lung.mv-regierung.de.

The event offers a unique opportunity to experience the fascinating world of nocturnal butterflies up close. Different species are attracted using the light-catching method so that their different colors, shapes and patterns can be observed directly. Participants learn lots of interesting facts about the way moths live, their ecological value and their role in native ecosystems.

It is particularly exciting to identify the moths found together with expert Volker Wachlin and learn how to recognize typical characteristics. In addition to scientific information, there are also practical tips on how to encourage moths in your own garden and why they are considered indicators of an intact environment.

The light trapping event is equally interesting for families, nature lovers and photographers. Please remember to bring weatherproof clothing, flashlights and possibly a small butterfly identification book.

The event takes place in the open air at Lake Hertha and offers a special insight into the nocturnal wildlife of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Take the opportunity to exchange ideas with like-minded people and discover the diversity of moths together. Registration is required - secure your place in good time!
