Life and Survival in the Congo. As part of “weltwechsel”
Freelance reporter and trainer Judith Raupp has been living and working in Goma, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, for 15 years. In her book, she recounts the everyday lives of people who, despite war, poverty, and political uncertainty, retain their courage and creativity. She takes readers to weddings, funerals, government offices, universities, and prisons, while also reporting on war, Ebola, COVID-19, and encounters with the secret service.
In doing so, she weaves personal experiences with the historical and political contexts of the conflicts in eastern Congo. She shows how the consequences of Belgian colonial rule, unresolved conflicts, and the struggle for valuable natural resources continue to shape people’s lives to this day, thereby providing an authentic insight into daily life in an often-overlooked region.
