With this lecture, the art historian Detlef Witt presents his book on the work of the sculptor Elias Kessler, who worked in Stralsund and the surrounding area at the beginning of the 18th century.
Elias Kessler left his mark on the art of sculpture in Stralsund and the surrounding area. He was recruited in 1707 to continue work on the main altar of St. Nicholas' Church in Stralsund based on designs by the Berlin palace architect Andreas Schlüter. This was followed by the sculptural decoration of the mighty baptistery in St. Nikolai around 1710-14, with the majority of the works being created in the 1720s.
With this lecture, Detlef Witt presents his book on the sculptor's work. The richly illustrated book comprises 62 works. In addition to the many surviving pieces, it also documents the wartime losses, such as the display walls of hereditary burials in Stralsund's Jakobikirche, which have been preserved in photographs.
