Book presentation and discussion about the upheavals of the post-reunification period from the perspective of those who experienced them directly.
On Friday, June 5, 2026 at 5 p.m., we invite you to a special event at phanTECHNIKUM, which will shed light on the upheavals of the post-reunification period from the perspective of those who experienced them directly. The evening will focus on the book "Der große Schock - Ostdeutsche erzählen von den Folgen der Treuhand-Politik" (BeBra Verlag). Editor Katrin Rohnstock has collected personal accounts from so-called storytelling salons. Although the stories originally come from industrial locations in Thuringia, they are representative of the fate of an entire generation in East Germany. Katrin Rohnstock will present the work in person and provide insights into its creation.
A special focus of the evening is the reference to our city: the upheavals of the early 1990s can still be felt in Wismar today. The history of the Mathias-Thesen shipyard in particular is characterized by lost jobs and abrupt breaks in the lives of many citizens. A long-time employee of the Mathias-Thesen shipyard reports as a contemporary witness on how the decisions of the Treuhand period changed everyday life and identity in Wismar. Political scientist and former DT64 editor Astrid Landero will moderate the event.
Following the reading and the discussion, you are cordially invited to contribute your own memories or simply listen to the reports of others. Together we would like to create a space for an examination of our own city history.
