Nestled in the idyllic French countryside lies the life’s work of Stephanie and Ruedi Baumann—an organic farm they have run for over 20 years with political zeal and dedication. As they grow older, the question arises of who will eventually take over the farm. Their son Simon, long established in his own life as a filmmaker, uses his camera to document how the family reflects on this future. His brother Kilian already runs his own farm. Both face the challenge of balancing their personal paths with the responsibility of the family legacy.
*WIR ERBEN* tells the story of a family in which personal relationships, ideals, and the reality of farming are inextricably linked. The conversations and conflicts reveal just how heavy the invisible burdens are: expectations, aspirations, and the unspoken pressure between generations. With subtle humor and unflinching honesty, the farm succession becomes a mirror reflecting central questions: What does responsibility mean? How much freedom does an inheritance allow? And how fair is inheritance in an era when wealth is unevenly distributed?
The intimate cinematic portrait “Wir erben” (We Inherit), which explores ownership, justice, and the future of family farms, has won numerous awards. Following the film, we will discuss inheritance in Germany and, in particular, how inheritance tax could be structured more fairly.
