Böll Monday Movie: “Spies Among Us”
“Spies Among Us” offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the GDR’s surveillance state. With the Stasi, the GDR had a powerful secret police force at its disposal to suppress its own population. Peter Keup, a historian and former victim of Stasi persecution, confronts the blind spots in his family history. This personal journey of coming to terms with the past takes an unexpected turn when he seeks dialogue with Stasi officers. “Spies Among Us” documents these conversations on film for the first time.
The film shows how far people will go to stay in power. But it also makes clear just how indomitable the human spirit is as it strives for truth and self-determination.
Followed by a discussion with historian and protagonist Dr. Peter Keup.
