Germany’s repressed past, “Between Stettin and Königsberg,” is coming to light once again.
The Polish Baltic Sea coast treats vacationers not only to a beautiful beach but also to a vast array of guesthouses, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
Historic cities such as Szczecin, Kołobrzeg, Gdańsk, and Elbingen are, in some cases, regaining their former splendor and demonstrate that the Poles have mastered the art of restoration. Masuria, with its many lakes, waterways, and forests, is a paradise in its own right—here, silence speaks volumes. We have also visited the Königsberg region, with its roughly one million inhabitants, several times since the collapse of the Soviet Union and are always amazed by what is gradually being rebuilt here. Once, this region—which was Christianized by the Teutonic Order at the point of a sword—was the easternmost corner of Germany and later the westernmost corner of the Soviet Empire.
