Love, Death & Dance
Catherine Larsen-Maguire, an acclaimed conductor who has previously led the opera gala of the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg, returns to Rheinsberg. Now she takes the podium of the Berlin State Youth Orchestra, which will present its workshop concert at the Schlosstheater featuring two masterpieces of Russian modernism and a world premiere.
Composed especially for the LJO Berlin in the Year of the Accordion, Eleftherios Veniadis’s Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra will be performed in front of an audience for the first time. Prokofiev’s immortal ballet music for “Romeo and Juliet” then unfolds in ten luminous scenes—from the famous balcony scene to Tybalt’s harrowing death. Shostakovich’s rousing “Festive Overture” provides the festive opening.
In this way, the Berlin State Youth Orchestra showcases its full sonic range: from festive orchestral exuberance and grand ballet drama to a contemporary world premiere featuring the accordion.
