On the occasion of the Greifswald Bach Week 2026
In this book, Knut Elstermann embarks on an extraordinary journey to Johann Sebastian Bach. The various cinema and television films that have dealt with the great composer over the decades serve as a common thread. He travels to the original locations of Bach's life and talks to filmmakers and music enthusiasts about the challenge of approaching a great artist whose personality is completely overshadowed by his works. Elstermann's book is a declaration of love to Bach, but at the same time, it also circles around the fundamental questions of biographical storytelling in an entertaining way. Where is the line between exaggeration and trivialization? How can an authentic portrait be created when so much has to be invented?
