29 paintings, oil on canvas, nature scenes by two amateur artists from the Island of Rügen
Their connection to nature is evident at first glance in the paintings of Gabriele Badura and Renate Mielenz: landscapes, still lifes, trees, and seascapes—primarily in oil on canvas. The two amateur artists met two years ago at the opening of the “Rügen malt!” exhibition at the Kreisvolkshochschule in Bergen. Since then, their visits to one another have been marked by a lively exchange about finding subjects and artistic expression.
Gabriele Badura, a horticultural engineer, moved to the Island of Rügen from the Ore Mountains back in the 1970s and has loved the island’s nature ever since. Gabriele Badura has been drawing and painting since childhood. For the past 20 years, she has been painting intensively, using her art to express her mood and perspective on the world. Her colorful paintings are realistic in style.
Educator Renate Mielenz moved to the Island of Rügen from the Anklam district in 1971 and has also been painting since childhood. She attended several painting classes but also went through periods when she did not paint. Currently, she captures the landscape of Rügen and the sea in oil.
In their joint exhibition, running from September 3 to October 15, 2026, at the vhs in Bergen, the amateur artists will showcase landscape and nature motifs on the theme of “Autumn.” Visits are free during the vhs’s opening hours or by appointment at 03838 2005812.
