An evening between eternity and transience with Dr. Anja Kretschmer and the Forschungsstelle Gruft.
Gertrudenfriedhof Güstrow, one of the oldest burial sites in Mecklenburg, becomes the setting for an extraordinary journey through time on this special night. In the mystical atmosphere of the autumn moon, crypts that would otherwise seem closed forever will be opened - a rare insight into the burial culture of past centuries.
An evening full of discoveries:
Crypt, coffin and shroud: researchers Dr. Regina and Dr. Andreas Ströbl are on a nationwide mission to rescue abandoned, forgotten and desecrated crypts in order to restore dignity and splendour to the deceased, who have been marked by vandalism, desecration and decay. During an interesting and impressive illustrated talk, you will find out what they discovered, how coffins can be placed in chronological order and what value our ancestors placed on their eternal resting place.
The Black Widow from Friedhofsgeflüster takes you back to the time when these crypts were built with stories that tell mystical and amusing tales about death, the dead and the undead.
Light installations immerse the historic burial chambers in a surreal flicker, while sounds and stories bring the past back to life.
Since 2013, this unique event has been traveling through northern Germany's most important burial sites: from the ducal crypts in Doberan to the hillside crypts of Boizenburg. This year, the Gertrudenfriedhof with its characteristic burial grounds will be the site of a special encounter with history.
"On this evening, the gates between the worlds will open. The present looks at the treasures of the past."
Selected drinks and snacks will be provided. An evening that answers questions you never dared to ask: Why are skulls found in tombs? What secrets do the inscriptions conceal? And how are the changing concepts of the afterlife reflected in these stone testimonies?
