But now she found it surprisingly difficult to do so. She felt like a harlequin with one eye laughing and the other crying, juggling three crumpled wish lists while balancing on a high tightrope. It was a difficult balancing act to switch sides at the same time. The outcome was uncertain.
The novel concludes a trilogy about an East German family of academics. After chronicling the years before the Berlin Wall was built and life in the GDR, Barbara Boy now tells the story of a new beginning after the fall of the Wall—with the hopes, misunderstandings, setbacks, and happy coincidences that shaped everyday life between East and West. Thanks to its openly autobiographical background and the incorporation of original documents, the story gains a special authenticity without losing its humorous tone.
