The range of medieval Doberan writings that have been researched is now considerable and remarkable. Sermons, commentaries, liturgical instructions, tales of devils and ghosts, forged documents and even stories about pirates have been handed down in writing.
From several examples, we can conclude that there was a circle of creative monks in the monastery who were not content with copying Bibles and liturgical texts, but discussed their own ideas and then put them "on parchment". The few pictorial initials of the Doberan writings known to date always show a dragon. In the Christian Middle Ages, this was a symbol of vigilance, logic, dialectics, wisdom and strength.
On the initiative of Paul Alexander Nebauer and with the help of institutions of medieval history and classical philology in Munich, Würzburg, Kiel, Brussels and Cambridge, work on the rediscovered codices is well advanced. For years, Paul Alexander Nebauer has been tracking down old writings and documents, translating them and making them accessible to the public. He will present a selection of his latest discoveries in the lecture.
