"Asta! Asta! Asta!" - a musical play about the silent film diva Asta Nielsen and her friends. With "Asta! Asta! Asta!", the theater makers tell the story of a woman who did not lose her voice, even though the world remained silent. A story that sounds more urgent today than ever.
A woman who showed attitude - then and now
Asta Nielsen was more than just an actress. She was a person who stood up to national agitation, the pursuit of power and media instrumentalization - and risked her fame to do so. She refused to make propaganda films for the Nazi regime, left Germany and remained true to herself. It is precisely this consistency, this "I'm not going along with this", that is frighteningly topical at a time when art and truth seem negotiable again.
"In the end, everyone has to justify their actions to themselves." - Asta Nielsen
This sentence forms the heart of the production.
It reminds us that democracy is not created on stages or in parliaments, but in the conscience of each individual. At the same time, "Asta! Asta! Asta!" offers not only deep reflections, but also witty dialog and re-enacted film clips as well as the singing of the 1920s.
With "Asta! Asta! Asta!", the Berlin company enkidu-events dedicates its 15th production to the legendary silent film diva Asta Nielsen - a woman who recognized early on how closely art, the public and politics are linked. At a time when conformity seems more comfortable than attitude, this theater work becomes a mirror of our present.
From Hiddensee to the theaters of the Republic
The production premiered in 2020 on Hiddensee, where Asta Nielsen spent her "happiest time".
