A crime novel set in Kiev in 1919: A squad of Red Army soldiers has disappeared right in the middle of the city while visiting a banya. When Samson finds bone fragments in the bathhouse’s stove, he uncovers a conspiracy. In this third volume featuring the kind-hearted Samson and the clever Nadezhda, Kurkov—a master of the absurd—brings early 1920s Kyiv to life, full of political turmoil, quirky characters, and playful parallels to the present day. This evening, we’ll be talking with one of the most important contemporary Ukrainian authors about the past and the present, about literature, and about everyday life during wartime.
Andrei Kurkov, born in 1961 in St. Petersburg, has lived in Kyiv since his childhood. His work has been published in 45 languages. Kurkov has been president of PEN Ukraine since 2018.
