The Special Film I 8 p.m. in the Stadtkulturhaus
Spring 1945, the Second World War is still raging, but on the small North Sea island of Amrum, the locals don't notice too much of it. Yes, there is no longer enough to eat, but thanks to the rustic farmer's wife Tessa (Diane Kruger), the fields are still being cultivated and so at least there are potatoes. Helping her with the sowing is 12-year-old Nanning (Jasper Billerbeck), who has fled to the island from his home town of Hamburg with his mother Hille (Laura Tonke), two younger siblings and a newborn baby. However, his father is a bigwig in the National Socialist system, which brings advantages but also disadvantages: the family has enough food stamps, but the swastika flag hoisted in front of the house makes them outsiders on the island. Most of the taciturn inhabitants have accepted the regime rather than actively supported it and long for the end of the war.
Not so Hille, however, who loses her will to live after hearing the news that Hitler has taken his own life in Berlin and stops eating. She only has an appetite for white bread with butter and honey, so Nanning does everything he can to make his mother happy.
