"Africans in MeckIn the Forum.STADT.Geschichte, Dr. Bernd Kasten talks about people from Africa who were brought to Mecklenburg from research trips.
At the Forum.STADT.Geschichte on 27 May 2026, Dr. Bernd Kasten, Head of the Schwerin City Archive, will report on a special aspect of Mecklenburg's colonial history at the beginning of the 20th century at the Kulturforum Schleswig-Holstein-Haus from 7.00 pm.
Under the title "Africans in Mecklenburg in the first quarter of the 20th century", the focus will be on the people brought to Mecklenburg from Africa by explorers and colonial officials and also by Duke Adolf Friedrich since the end of the 19th century.
Between 1905 and 1925, Africans repeatedly stayed in Schwerin, Raben Steinfeld and Rostock. Some only stayed for a few days, others for many years. The lecture describes how the local population reacted to these foreign visitors and how their lives then continued.
