The Stralsund Hospital on the Sund is surrounded by garden spaces that look back on 150 years of history. It is also situated in a magnificent landscape directly on the Strelasund, with a view of the Island of Rügen. The gardens of the Krankenhaus am Sund were laid out in 1938 in conjunction with the construction of the naval hospital, based on designs by one of the most important German landscape architects of the 20th century—Hermann Mattern. By incorporating the old trees from Beckers Park, a remarkable harmony was created between the architecture, the park, and the landscape. The park offered patients a soothing outdoor retreat. It was also used for cultural and sporting events. A nursery supplied the hospital with fruits and vegetables.
The park, with its venerable tree population, retained its historic garden structure well into the 1990s. In 2002, large sections of the hospital park were built over to make way for a surgical building, and the garden courtyards between the hospital’s wings underwent significant redesigns. The garden at the former chief physician’s residence—which has served as the “Schatzkiste” daycare center since 2016—was redesigned as a play area and open space to meet the children’s needs. Picturesquely situated on the high bank amid old trees, the Tea Pavilion—built at the behest of paint factory owner Carl Becker—stands as the last surviving garden structure from Becker’s Park.
During the guided tour, the original concept of the hospital gardens and their historical development will be explained.
