Angelika Klüssendorf tells a story of love, separation, and the longing for belonging. Rita, a master at falling in love with the wrong men, suddenly disappears from the world. For seventeen-year-old Jane, life begins to show its first cracks. She has a deep bond with Rita, her stepmother. And how is she supposed to cope with a war whose violence she cannot comprehend? Will her friendship with Lea survive this abysmal year? Joachim, on the other hand—illiterate in matters of the heart—encounters, in his late sixties, an unexpected love that he doesn’t have to question.
A defiantly cheerful novel of unsettling relevance that seeks solace in a world that has fallen apart.
Angelika Klüssendorf, born in 1958 in Ahrensburg, lived in Leipzig from 1961 until she moved away in 1985; today she lives in the countryside in Mecklenburg. She has published several collections of short stories and novels, as well as the novel trilogy *Das Mädchen*, *April*, and *Jahre später*, each of whose individual titles was nominated for the German Book Prize and twice made the shortlist. Most recently, she was awarded the Marie Luise Kaschnitz Prize (2019). Her novel *Risse* was nominated for the longlist of the 2023 German Book Prize.
