Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 4 in G major
Surely you, too, have wondered at least once what will become of you when you are no longer here. Gustav Mahler, at any rate, seems unable to settle on a single vision. In his Symphony No. 4, he describes life “afterward” as a paradisiacal state: “We lead an English life, / Yet we’re quite merry on the side, / We dance and leap, / We hop and sing.” In contrast, the Rückert Lieder offer a quieter, more introspective view of this “afterlife”—searching, doubting, full of longing for peace and transcendence. Between detachment from the world and existential darkness, a very personal sense of what might lie beyond life emerges here.
