In her solo program, Mareille Merck (*1996) explores the endless possibilities of the guitar. She uses the freedom of solo performance to break down stylistic boundaries. For example, she combines fingerstyle techniques with typical jazz elements. She captivates audiences with her innovative, unique approach to the instrument, explores versatile sonic facets with great attention to detail, and breathes life into the catchy melodies of her compositions using, for example, harmonics, open strings—some tuned in unusual ways—or her idiosyncratic use of the tremolo bar. Technical skills are by no means an end in themselves—the focus is always on the core of the musical message, which Mareille shapes with her unmistakable sound and weaves together with sonic diversity and precision.
Merk’s solo album *Kaleidoskop*, which she produced together with Nik Bärtsch, was released on September 5, 2025. This was followed by numerous press reviews, including the “Album of the Month” award in Gitarre & Bass magazine, “Audiophile Album of the Month” in Audio Stereoplay magazine, and a 5/5-star rating in Jazzthetik magazine. The release tour took Merck not only to Switzerland but also to Germany, Austria, and Denmark.
“Her playing has a certain mystique to it, but she can also create a lot of dynamism with incisive lines and, at times, crashing chords. After just a few tracks, you recognize her very unique musical and guitaristic language, her subtle sensitivity when it comes to dynamics and tone, and her groove.” Jazzthetik 09/10-2025, Lothar Trampert
