Ostracized—one word, four fates. On the anniversary of the November pogroms, we remember the ostracized, persecuted, and murdered composers: Franz Schreker died as early as 1934 and was thereafter considered “degenerate.” Kurt Weill fled to the U.S. in 1935 and completed his Symphony No. 2 along the way. Viktor Ullmann was deported in 1942 and continued to compose until his murder. Henriëtte Bosmans was the most important female composer in the Netherlands—until she was banned from practicing her profession in 1940. This concert features four wonderful works to discover, which would likely be much better known today were it not for this dark chapter in German history.
