The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Regional Heritage Association invites you to an event focused on discussion and networking about the future of Low German across the fields of volunteer work, culture, education, and politics.

Between Volunteerism and Securing the Future – Perspectives for Low German

How can Low German stay alive? What role do volunteerism, culture, education, and politics play? And what is needed to ensure that future generations can also experience, use, and pass on the Low German language?

The 13th Low German Roundtable of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Heritage Association invites you to the Kulturdiele M8 in Stralsund on October 10, 2026. The event brings together dedicated individuals and those interested in Low German language and cultural work, as well as representatives from associations, education, academia, politics, and the volunteer sector.
The focus will be on the future of Low German in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Topics will include the visibility of Low German cultural forms, the significance of Low German in a multilingual society, and the question of how volunteer efforts can be strengthened and supplemented by reliable professional structures.

Special attention is also being paid to how young people can be engaged with Low German and what role schools, daycare centers, culture, and digital media play in this effort. How can Low German be more than just a school subject or a cultural heritage worth preserving—and once again become more visible as a living language in everyday life and in public?

In addition to expert insights and panel discussions, the roundtable provides a forum for presenting projects, initiatives, and best practices. Looking beyond Mecklenburg-Vorpommern opens up new perspectives and highlights the approaches other regions are taking to promote Low German.

A cultural presentation from the fields of music, literature, or theater brings the diversity and vibrancy of Low German culture to life.

The Round Table sees itself as an open forum for exchange, networking, and new ideas. The goal is to engage in dialogue, strengthen existing networks, initiate new collaborations, and jointly develop perspectives for the future of Low German
