A literary-musical homage
Hildegard Knef (1925-2002), who was born in Ulm and became a Berliner, was an exceptional phenomenon: actress, international star, chanson singer and author. In the ruins of the post-war period, she began her career on Berlin stages, became internationally famous with Wolfgang Staudte's film Die Mörder sind unter uns (1946) and even conquered Hollywood shortly afterwards.
But she returned to Germany, wrote her autobiography Der geschenkte Gaul - a global bestseller - and began a second career as a lyricist and singer. Her songs tell of strength, longing and sharp humor - unforgotten to this day.
Doreen Blask reads excerpts from Der geschenkte Gaul. Nora Gauger sings selected chansons that not only make it "rain red roses", but also show lesser-known facets of this unique artist.
