The music of Weird Youth weaves together the warmth of classic 1970s singer-songwriter traditions - inspired by the likes of Neil Young and The Band
Weird Youth is the personal solo project of Dutch musician and songwriter Harmen Ridderbos, for years a defining voice of the indie scene in the Netherlands. After stints in bands such as Town of Saints, Electropoëzie, CAW CAW and as a collaborator of Melle Leyten, Ridderbos brings his own musical vision clearly to the point with Weird Youth.
The music of Weird Youth interweaves the warmth of classic 1970s singer-songwriter traditions - inspired by the likes of Neil Young and The Band - with echoes of the finely chiseled, emotional indie rock aesthetic of the 1990s. This combination creates a sound that is both familiar and poetically new, carried by personal stories, intense melodies and a raw, authentic studio aesthetic.
On their debut album Season One, Weird Youth create soundscapes that are like faded Polaroids - warm around the edges, honest at the core. Harmen Ridderbos recorded all the instruments himself and used an 8-track cassette recorder to create organic, immediate tracks that impressively carry his introspective lyrics and subtle blend of folk, rock and indie.
Live, Weird Youth unfolds this mix of introspective depth and musical directness in a special way: reduced arrangements, clear melodies and a palpable closeness to the audience make every show an intense moment. Friends of Bright Eyes, Elliott Smith or the classic songwriter tradition will find an act that convinces with a warm heart and serious musicality.
