An artists' collective brings art to life through sound. Paintings by Caspar David Friedrich come to life through music—an electrifying performance to mark the birthday of Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840).

What do Caspar David Friedrich’s paintings sound like? What “acoustic” landscapes are captured in his oil paintings? When you look at Caspar David Friedrich’s paintings, you can practically hear nature: the roaring sea in “The Monk by the Sea,” the wind-swept cloths in “On the Sailboat,” or the crashing ice floes in “The Ice Sea.”

In the performance “Beats in Oil,” Bauhaus student Malte Gunst and award-winning guitarist and producer Johannes Feige (shortlisted for the “German Record Critics’ Award”) these soundscapes with electronic beats, breathing new life into the Romantic paintings. Set against a backdrop of projected paintings, featuring improvisations by dancer Eleonora Fabrizi (Rome Opera Theatre, among others) and elements of live music, an electrifying performance unfolds that brings Caspar David Friedrich’s paintings into the present day.

Duration: approx. 40–50 minutes
