St. John's Church in Kühlungsborn - the first bike path church in Mecklenburg
The fieldstone church was built in 1220 by the nuns of Parchow. The peculiarity is the wooden bell tower (in the current form of 1680), which stood so before 1500. Around 1400 the church was extended by the Gothic choir room and the vault. The triumphal cross group and the figure of the Madonna date back to around 1400.
Local families immortalized themselves around 1660 in the 42 baroque stained glass windows in the choir. In 1963 the company EULE (Bautzen) built a new organ (11 sounding stops on two manuals) for this church.
After an extensive renovation (2011/2012), the church received a new altar table, a reading desk and an altar cross made of high-quality acrylic glass. With its simple form and restrained colors, the altar makes the restored baroque figures in the choir room stand out more. The triumphal cross group and the crowned Madonna also appear in a renewed version. The organ changed its location from the west gallery to the south gallery. This provides a great sound development.
Since March 2012 it is the first "Radwegekirche" in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (toilet / rest area / bicycle repair service by Wilfried Pietsch: 0173 - 2364549).
