What do I need to consider on my paddling tour?

Kayak or canoe?

Canoes: are all boats that are not propelled by a rudder attached to the boat, but by loose paddles in the hands of the canoeist. Therefore, both canoes and kayaks belong to the generic term canoe. Whereby touring kayaks are usually equipped with a foot-controlled rudder system.

Canadian canoe: Is open at the top, is used sitting or kneeling and is usually used by several people. It is moved with a paddle.

Advantages:

  • Plenty of space for luggage and therefore well suited for hiking tours
  • Greater freedom of movement in the boat, variable seating positions
  • Easier to get in and out of the boat

Disadvantages:

  • Paddling technique more difficult to learn
  • More susceptible to wind and tipping

Kayak?

Closed at the top except for a small gap for entry. The design is narrower and flatter than a Canadian canoe. There are hatches at the front and rear that can be filled with luggage (not waterproof). It is moved with a double paddle. The driver sits with his legs outstretched. There are single and double-seaters.

Advantages

  • Paddling technique is quicker to learn
  • Less susceptible to wind
  • Fast forward progress

Disadvantages

  • Fixed seating position, hardly any freedom of movement
  • Getting in and out is more difficult
