Secret Stasi prison in the middle of Neustrelitz
Today's Töpferstraße Neustrelitz Stasi prison memorial site is located in a court prison built in 1897. In 1953, the district administration of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) set up its headquarters on the grounds around the prison. It used the court prison as a remand prison for mainly political prisoners until 1987. Among them were people whose opinions differed from those of the communist dictatorship, who were dissatisfied with the living conditions in the GDR or who were targeted by the MfS in other ways. Disinformed and isolated, they were often imprisoned for months in inhumane conditions.
The cell wing on the top floor has been largely preserved in its 1987 condition. It can be visited during opening hours. A modern audiovisual exhibition gives former prisoners, their relatives and members of the MfS a chance to have their say.
Find out about the fates of the former inmates and the history of the site. Although it is located in the middle of the city, even many locals still don't know what went on behind the walls.
The memorial is open from May to October on Thursdays from 4pm to 7pm and Sundays from 1pm to 5pm. Every Thursday at 5 pm there is a guided tour by contemporary witnesses. The exhibition can be reached via an elevator.
Or explore the grounds around the detention center yourself with your smartphone! To go on a digital scavenger hunt, download the Actionbound app in advance.
The memorial site is run by the Stasi Prison Töpferstraße Neustrelitz e. V. association. Admission is free of charge. Donations are requested.
