As a foundation of Nicolaus` I. von Werle the construction of the choir was started around 1235. It served as a place of worship for the princely family at Röbel Castle, its inhabitants and the small Altröbel community.
Today, there are many indications that St. Mary's was built on the former temple hill of the Wendish Müritzers. It represents a Romanesque-Gothic transitional style, the first extensions around the initially two-bay nave then took place in the 14th century. This makes this Röbel landmark one of the oldest brick buildings in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The decoration of the choir stalls, as well as the later high endowment of the Marienkirche with land, are indications of a princely influence - the not particularly wealthy households of the Altröbel service providers would not have been able to afford such an expensive brick building on their own. Thanks to the high rental income for their land and the considerable financial support of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg as the hereditary successor of the Princes of Werle-Wenden, the church could be extensively renovated in 1849-1851.
