The new "Climate Forest Fleesensee" in the Mecklenburg Lake District was inaugurated with a fantastic planting campaign on October 22, 2011. Since its opening, around 20 hectares of new forest have already been established during the annual planting campaigns. From 2024, the Fleesensee climate forest will be significantly expanded once again: East of the Kostermühle and south of the "Rosinenberg", around 4 hectares of agricultural land will be turned into a site-adapted climatic forest with a forest edge. Over the course of 100 years, native hardwood species will have absorbed a further 467 tons of CO2 per hectare or 1889 tons of CO2 over the entire area.

Here in the climax forest, mainly sessile oaks (on the drier hilltops) and fluttering elms (in the wetter "valleys") were planted on flat, undulating terrain. Wild fruit and various shrub species were also used to shape the edge of the forest. Sessile oak and small-leaved lime make up the largest proportion of tree species, but red oak, European larch, bird cherry, wych elm, field maple, the respective "tree of the year" and others can also be found in the climatic forest.
Since 2017, there has been a circular hiking trail through the climate forest, the so-called climate trail, which informs visitors about the forest and climate on 6 information boards.

How to find the Fleesensee climate forest
The entire reforestation area is located to the south-east of the climatic health resort of Malchow, close to the B192 federal highway. There is a car park on the right-hand side of the B192 in the direction of Waren, about 3 km away. The reforestation area is 300 meters away and can be reached via a signposted footpath.

Forest shares for our climate forests
Since 2007, more than 100 hectares of new, climate change-adapted forest have been planted at 19 different locations in all parts of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The reforestation of these additional areas was financed by "forest shares" from holidaymakers, residents and companies. During planting campaigns for our climate forests, guests can talk to forestry experts and learn exciting details about the forest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
