Voluntary Ecological Year

Please be considerate in the nature park on the Szczecin Lagoon.

Voluntary service on the Szczecin Lagoon teaches young people to appreciate nature. And to protect it.

Two young people on the way to their future are looking down a narrow path that winds its way over an inland end. They are Frieder Joost-Meyer zu Bakum, 20, and Zora Krieger, 17. „It makes sense that we should stay on the paths in the nature park“, says Frieder to Zora. „Because that way we can see and experience a lot, but not disturb nature.“ Zora nods. She has started her voluntary ecological year (FÖJ) at the Stettiner Haff Nature Park. Frieder was her predecessor there. Today, he takes Zora on an exploration tour through the nature park in the northeast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Here, on the border with Poland, guests can experience an unusual variety of different natural landscapes. They range from the natural, unspoilt sections of the lagoon coast and the lagoon meadows to fens and extensive beech and pine forests, which make up almost half of the protected area. In addition, there are clearings, dry grasslands and inland meadows. The nature park covers 553 square kilometers and is a real paradise for wildlife spotting, especially in autumn. Frieder wants to show Zora the diversity of the nature reserve and give her a few tips on how to behave.

Experience a lot without disturbing

The FÖJ program involves young people spending a year working for the environment, nature conservation and ecology. The Am Stettiner Haff Nature Park is also one of the locations for this youth volunteer service. The tasks of the volunteers at the Szczecin Lagoon include practical support for nature conservation, general area supervision, environmental education measures, maintenance work, visitor guidance, monitoring and a little bit of office work. „For me, the FÖJ was a year of orientation“, Frieder tells his successor later at the village of Rieth, where the two of them hike along a stretch of the lagoon coast. „And at the same time the opportunity to get involved socially and ecologically. Now I know that nature is my place.“ It is very quiet on the lagoon, a white butterfly flutters above the reeds. The riverside path along which the two of them are walking is also signposted as the Szczecin Lagoon circular route - and as if on cue, a small group of long-distance cyclists immediately turn the corner, their fully packed saddlebags indicating that they have set themselves the entire 310-kilometre circular route. Hopefully they also know how to behave in the nature park.

Zora and Frieder climb up the wooden observation tower by the water. They enjoy the view of the lagoon and eat some fruit they have brought from home to fortify themselves. „It is essential to take your garbage home with you. It is always best to bring a bowl of garbage with you," Frieder reminds us. „You know, even a banana peel takes about three years to rot.“ Zora nods. She is familiar with the waste problem in the nature parks and knows that many visitors carelessly discard cigarette butts or candy wrappers. That certainly won't happen to her.

Paddling - gentle mobility in the nature park

Frieder's FÖJ in the nature park on the Szczecin Lagoon lasted twelve months. Zora wants to know what he particularly enjoyed. „That I could be outside so much“, says Frieder after a moment's thought. „The best thing was when I was out in a canoe in the evening. A great form of gentle mobility in the park. You get close to nature, but you're not a disturbance factor," he enthuses, recounting encounters with beavers on the Uecker and Randow rivers. As proof, he takes Zora to Eggesin. This is not only home to the nature park center with its exciting, interactive exhibition on the park's various natural habitats. It is also where Bärbel and Detlef Ertelt run a campsite with boat hire. Frieder takes Zora on a short canoe trip on the Randow. And sure enough, as soon as the two of them have paddled a few lengths, they hear a bright whistle and a kingfisher shoots out of the bank like a blue flash. A nice welcome gesture for Zora.

The River Randow near Eggesin offers plenty of nature - the two FÖjler paddle along the river in a canoe.

A crane migration flies by in the sky

Shh, the cranes are coming!

„Come on, let's go to the Fuchsberg“, suggests Frieder after the paddle tour. The Fuchsberg is in the Brohmer mountains. The two of them quietly cross a primeval forest landscape full of mysterious ponds, ghostly old trees and romantic hiking trails. It's already autumn and there is a light mist in the valley. From the Fuchsberg, the view stretches far over hills and forests. Deer are calling in the distance; it sounds like there must be a lot of them. Autumn is the best time of year to observe animals in the Szczecin Lagoon Nature Park.

Not only red deer and fallow deer, but also the birdlife is particularly exciting to experience now. After a year of FÖJ, Frieder can tell us a lot about the animals in the nature park. About the cranes, for example, which always rest here for a few weeks in the fall and rest up before flying on to their winter quarters. During the day they feed in the fields and at sunset they fly to their sleeping quarters on the shore," explains the young man to his successor. The two have taken up position at an observation stand in the reeds of Lake Galenbeck. „It is very important not to disturb the animals“, whispers Frieder. „You should always move calmly, be quiet and take photos without a flash“, he advises Zora, while the two wait for the birds. It is already getting dark. Pink cloud ships pass by in the autumn sky and flocks of starlings form fanciful shapes. Zora smiles. It is a promising start to her year in the nature park on the Szczecin Lagoon.
