Lecture series "University in the Town Hall" / Speaker: Prof. Dr. Sünne Juterczenka (Faculty of Philosophy)
The oceans are natural spaces, transportation routes and the scene of geopolitical conflicts. History has shown time and again that their control is decisive for the balance of power on land. However, experiences, perceptions and interpretations have always shaped our relationship with the seas. With the onset of globalization around 1500, they became meeting places where people of different origins came together. This gives rise to new questions and cultural-historical perspectives for historians: How did ideas and knowledge about the seas change over time? What emotions were triggered by the confrontation with 'new' worlds beyond the seas? How can a maritime history of the body or senses be written? The lecture explores these and other questions - and sometimes finds the answers in surprising places.
