Musical homage to Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya
Musical homage to Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya
with Ensemble VIDA
as part of the concert series KLINGENDES GUT 2025
The unlikely couple meet in Vienna in 1924. Lotte Lenya, an actress from a poor background, and Kurt Weill, an aspiring composer with German-Jewish roots.
Fascinated by her voice, Weill wrote the music for the roles that made Lotte famous. The Threepenny Opera, Weill's well-known work, which skillfully jumps through the genres of jazz, operetta and fairground music, is very well received by audiences, despite difficulties in the creation process.
"What we wanted to do was the original form of opera. With every musical stage work, the question arises anew: How is music, how is singing in particular, even possible in the theater?" Kurt Weill
An exchange of letters bears witness to love and aberrations, to professional successes and political dangers, to a deep friendship between hope and despair.
The Ensemble VIDA dedicates itself to the musical work of Kurt Weill. Actress Jana Kühn sings Weill's songs and reads from the correspondence between the two artists.
A piece of contemporary history within old walls with a hopeful view of the future.
