"Arrived? The new residents of the Mecklenburg manor houses" - Lecture with Prof. Dr. Sabine Bock
80 years ago, with the end of the Second World War, an enormous movement of refugees began, the actual numbers of which are still being corrected upwards today.
The Mecklenburg Foundation has been dealing with the topics of flight, expulsion and migration for many years. A traveling exhibition has also been created for this purpose, which has already been shown at numerous locations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. One of the basic questions with regard to the regional history of flight and expulsion is: Where did the people who arrived in Mecklenburg stay and under what circumstances were they accommodated?
This question will be addressed by the Schwerin monument conservator Prof. Dr. Sabine Bock in her lecture "Arrived? The new residents of the Mecklenburg manor houses".
The lecture shows how the accommodation of refugee families in the empty manor houses was carried out and how long those accommodated had to endure the largely inadequate conditions. In addition to the suffering and hardship of the refugees, the administration was also faced with the issue of maintaining the manor houses. Their function as residences for large landowners became obsolete with the end of the war and the expulsion of the owners.
The same applied to the maintenance structures for these houses, which had been linked to the corresponding personnel. At many points, the newly organized monument preservation of the state of Mecklenburg was not up to the task at the time.
