Lecture and talk at the Federal Archives - Stasi Records Archive Schwerin on September 20, 2025
Employees of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) filed special files in the so-called Archive File 5 - Secret Files, keeping their contents strictly confidential. From the point of view of the MfS, these contained "state secrets of central importance". However, the indexing by employees of the Federal Archives - Stasi Records Archive revealed a different picture: the "state secrets" were mostly suicides, desertions and crimes committed by their own unofficial (IM) and full-time employees, but also by public figures in the GDR. In order to maintain the image of a professional and law-abiding secret service, the MfS kept these cases under wraps - not only from the public, but also from its own employees.
In his lecture on Saturday, September 20, at the Stasi Records Archive in Schwerin, Malte Druckrey will give an introduction to the history and contents of the secret file and use examples to demonstrate which cases the Stasi typically filed there.
In addition to the lecture, there will be a guided tour of the archive. There is also the opportunity to apply for access to Stasi documents. A valid identity document is required for this.
