Reading in the Red Pavilion with Jürgen Gottfriedsen
The historical novel begins in 1850 after the suppression of the Schleswig uprising by the Danes and describes the turmoil of emigration. Julius is 17 years old when he decides to emigrate because he sees no future for himself in his village of Hadersleben. Eight-year-old Louise also leaves Hadersleben with her family after her father is dismissed by the Danes as a bailiff. When Julius returns to Europe from Australia after 10 years, he meets Louise and finds love. But his financial situation does not allow him to start a family. Julius moves back out into the world to Brazil, while Louise runs her grandmother's household in Copenhagen and waits many years for him to officially ask her to marry him.
Jürgen Gottfriedsen, born in 1953, grew up in Franconia and has lived in a village in Mecklenburg for over 30 years. His debut novel "Der Überseekoffer" is inspired by the life of his great-grandfather, who emigrated in 1850 but only found a new home 20 years later after an odyssey across four continents. Gottfriedsen describes the living conditions of that time and combines fiction with real life.
