Garden history tour with Hannes Rother | Participation: 7 euros - During the tour, the history and composition of the park and its sections will be presented.
The landscape park in Putbus on the island of Rügen is one of the most important garden creations in northern Germany, both in terms of the history of its creation and the art of garden design. As the park of the residential palace of the Princes of Putbus, it is also a constituent part of the town, which was founded in 1810 by Wilhelm Malte zu Putbus as a planned town with a variety of references to its urban structure.
Using individual elements of an existing Baroque pleasure garden, a landscape garden was created from around 1815, the design of which was significantly influenced by the ideas of the universally educated Wilhelm Malte himself, which he had also been able to develop further on trips to England (1805) and Italy (1810/11). The references can be traced right up to the present day. The individual sections of the park and the buildings it contains are cleverly placed in relation to each other and subjected to the interplay of trees, light and water.
During the guided tour, the history and composition of the park and its sections will be presented, information about the people involved and about the buildings that have been included or lost will be provided, as well as insights into significant restoration work at the end of the 20th century.
