In the block of flats in Rostock where MEL (34) grew up, the legend is still told today: one of them became one of the youngest self-made millionaires in the country. MEL's own memories of her youth, however, are anything but happy. On a mission to finally put the dark stains of the past behind her and look to the future, she buys the whole block without further ado. The plan is to return to this place one last time to leave it behind once and for all as a positive memory. But if you summon the old ghosts, you have to expect them to have an opinion of their own. Director Mark Sternkiker, who is currently filming in Gessin, is available to talk about the film.
After years, self-made millionaire Mel returns to the block of houses in Rostock where she grew up and which she has since bought. In her yellow sports car (license plate F CK 381), Mel, who became wealthy as a gamer and by selling an energy drink, stops in front of the prefabricated building, which she describes as "her ugly piece of shit". Here she meets local politician Fiete, who now wants to make use of Mel's fame in his election campaign. In between, Mel talks to a therapist on the phone from time to time. Mel's encounters with the place and the people bring back memories of her childhood and youth.
Looking back: Melanie grows up in Rostock Groß Klein as the daughter of a single working mother and wants to leave this place as soon as possible. She often spends her free time with three classmates: her best friend Jennifer, Pfütze, who constantly pees on everything, and Martin, with whom they play games on the computer. But when their feelings for each other change - Melanie and Jennifer are both in love with Puddle - and Melanie is repeatedly mocked by the others because of her neurodermatitis, she increasingly withdraws from the group. Meanwhile, Melanie has made contact with her elderly, single neighbor Renate, who lets her use the Internet and play games on the computer. As a result, the two of them spend more and more time together. Renate tells Melanie about her daughter Diana, who left her at the time and with whom she has no contact, but wishes she did.
When Renate has to go into hospital, she shows Melanie a box containing almost 100,000 Deutschmarks, which she received for the sale of her house in Warnemünde after reunification. If Renate doesn't survive her stay, Melanie is to give the money to Diana. Life in the block becomes increasingly difficult for Melanie. Her friends bully her and there are frequent arguments with her mother, so she usually goes to Renate. She believes in Melanie's potential and says that her chance will come, but that she must not miss it. When Renate dies one day, Melanie finds herself alone again. A little later, Melanie takes the money box from Renate's apartment one night and leaves her hated block with it.
In the present, 20 years later, Mel meets some of her classmates from back then, who reproach her for leaving. She also meets Renate's daughter Diana on the roof of the block, who knows a lot about Mel's past from her mother's notes. She accuses Mel of giving Renate everything she never knew and that she also owes her success to Renate. During the house clearance, Diana found no evidence that Renate cared about her. Mel tells Diana that Renate had wanted her to get in touch with her mother.
In a conversation with her bodyguard, he tells Mel that he once imagined returning to his home village and blowing everything up. Mel tells him that she can't be happy as long as the block is here. Mel goes on stage at Fiete's campaign event and tells the cheering residents through the microphone that she has found the solution and will blow up the entire block.
