Reading with Lutz Dettmann at Stavenhagen Castle
Did you know that the Mecklenburg state assemblies were not only politicized, but that swords and pistols were also drawn? Are you aware that Mecklenburg village school teachers were not allowed to serve as one-year volunteers in the German army? Can you imagine a hereditary duke having to spoon out his soup while tied to a table leg? Or do you know why the pronunciation of the word Mecklenburg betrays the foreigner or the Mecklenburger?
If not, Lutz Dettmann will answer this question for you. And not only that. He will take you on a journey through the history of Mecklenburg in stories, introducing you to more or less well-known events and personalities from Mecklenburg.
Lutz Dettmann comes from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and lived in Schwerin until 1997, today he lives in Rugensee. He is a member of the board of the Hans Fallada Society and has been on the board of the "Förderverein Alter Friedhof Schwerin e.V." since 2010 and acts as editor-in-chief for the "Orte der Erinnerungen" series of publications.
Dettmann became known for his first novel "Wer die Beatles nicht kennt" (Who doesn't know the Beatles), which depicts the adolescent years and coming of age of the main male character in the GDR in the 1970s. 2021 saw the publication of "Wie aus Meklenburg Mecklenburg wurde - Geschichten und Personen". The book contains texts on Mecklenburg's history and portraits that appeared in various newspapers and magazines. The sequel "Stories from History" was published in 2025.
