The history of the Schwerin grinding mill
The mill at the outlet of the Faulen See was a powder, tan and grain mill and experienced its most impressive period as a stone grinding mill from 1749 to 1856. At that time, works of art made of natural stone were produced here for the (grand) ducal court - from magnificent floors to walking stick knobs - some of them "preserved as shrines at many of the highest courts in Europe", as court gardener Klett reports. The impressive technical monument has been operated as a museum since 1985 and has been a World Heritage Site as part of the Schwerin Residence Ensemble since 2024.
Historian Dr. Ralf Gehler provides an insight into its eventful history, in which the most diverse facets of the changing times become tangible.
