Cooperation event with the "Erinnerungsort Stasi Haftanstalt Töpferstraße Neustrelitz e.V."
The book tells the story of the life and death of Matthias Domaschk (1957-1981), a young man from Jena. On April 10, 1981, the 23-year-old was arrested by the Stasi on his way to Berlin. Two days later he was dead after being interrogated in Gera prison.
Wensierski reconstructs Domaschk's last days using new files and over 160 contemporary witnesses, including Stasi officers involved for the first time. He shows the hopes of a young generation for an open society and how deadly the division into "friends" and "enemies" could end.
With numerous photos, letters and diaries, "Jena Paradise" gives a vivid picture of resistance, repression and awakening in the GDR.
