Activities for the nationwide Read Aloud Day under this year's motto Reading aloud speaks your language

Reading aloud is much more than just a nice evening routine. Reading aloud teaches children how language works. It trains language, thinking and concentration, makes them more creative and promotes empathy. However, many adults underestimate how important reading aloud is for children's entire reading path. Currently, one in three children is not read to or is only rarely read to, which has a negative impact on learning to read later on. A quarter of children are currently unable to read well enough after elementary school and the same applies to a quarter of 15-year-olds. Early support is needed to prevent this from happening in the first place. Multilingualism is not an obstacle, but a real resource: this is also conveyed by the motto of this year's nationwide Read Aloud Day: "Reading aloud speaks your language".

In the morning, the city library will read to groups of children and at 3 pm in the afternoon, everyone is invited to listen to a special story in the picture book cinema: "Ella spricht tausend Sprachen" by Madlen Ottenschläger and Sabine Rothmund from Esslinger Verlag: an imaginative join-in picture book that makes children want to learn rhymes, quat words and their own languages! For children aged 4-8 years.

Ella not only speaks like the grown-ups - but also shouts, rhymes, whispers and bubbles. Even backwards if she doesn't want to go to bed at night: "Ella" then becomes "Alle"!

With lots of humor and linguistic wit, the book invites you to join in, invent and laugh. A wonderful plea for how playful and imaginative language can be!

Since 2004, the nationwide Read Aloud Day, a joint initiative of DIE ZEIT, Stiftung Lesen and Deutsche Bahn Stiftung, has been Germany's largest reading aloud festival and a public signal to get children and adults excited about the importance of reading aloud every year on the third Friday in November. Over one million participants now take part throughout Germany.
