A lecture on the Neptunwerft in the period after reunification by Dr. Wolfgang Lange.
Speaker: Dr. Wolfgang Lange, Rostock
The Rostock Neptun shipyard had over 7000 employees at the time of reunification in 1989. After German reunification, the company was privatized, was initially managed in trust and initially belonged to the Bremen Vulkan group. Due to EU restrictions, the shipyard had to stop building new ships in 1991. This resulted in a drastic reduction in staff, some of whom continued to be employed in a rescue company. Neptunwerft took a two-pronged approach: on the one hand, the shipyard site in the city center was abandoned and the area underwent a rigorous redesign. After changing its name to Neptun Industrie Rostock GmbH in 1993, the company became part of the Meyer Werft Group in 1997.
On the other hand, a new start was made in Warnemünde with the construction of new factory halls and production facilities. In order to circumvent the ban on sea-going ships, river passenger ships and ship halves were built, among other things.
Dr. Wolfgang Lange has studied the history of the Neptunwerft shipyard intensively and will talk about the development of the old and new shipyard areas between 1990 and today in his lecture on April 9 at 4 p.m. on the traditional ship.
