She has been at the MEERESMUSEUM for 60 years: leatherback turtle "Marlene"
October marks the anniversary of the discovery of the leatherback turtle "Marlene": She was found 60 years ago in the Prohner Wiek. Her journey took her via Rostock and Berlin to what was then the Stralsund District Museum of Natural History.
Theleatherback turtle "Marlene" is much more than just an extraordinary exhibit - she is a defining figure in the history and profile of the German Oceanographic Museum.
To mark her special significance, we cordially invite you to an "Evening for Marlene" on October 29.
Meet our museum team and discover original skeletal parts of the leatherback turtle from our collection. Wolfgang Gregor - bronze caster and creator of the "Bronze Marlene" - will also be on hand to provide insights into his work.
Experience a cinematic journey through time with original historical footage of the salvage from 1965 - a moving look back at the beginning of a special museum history.
Afterwards, marine biologist Sandra Striegel will dedicate her lecture "The magic of sea turtles" to the protection and research of these fascinating animals - and show why they need our attention today more than ever.
To round off the evening, we invite you to talk to the team from the German Oceanographic Museum and the Friends of the Museum.
Admission: 6:30 p.m. | Start: 7 p.m.
Admission is free. Donations are requested.
The event is organized together with the Friends of the German Oceanographic Museum.
