Getting to the bottom of it: Lecture on the Stone Age in Mecklenburg

The Schwaaner Kulturförderverein is continuing its lecture series with researchers from the University of Rostock and invites you to a journey into the Stone Age on Thursday, November 13 at 7 pm. Dr. Marcel Bradtmöller from the Heinrich Schliemann Institute for Classical Studies at the University of Rostock will be speaking on the subject: Getting to the bottom - Stone Age settlements and structures at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The lecture will deal with the current state of research on Stone Age settlement sites on the Mecklenburg Baltic Coast. The many years of preliminary work will be summarized and the current research of ongoing joint projects will be presented. The potential of the archaeological cultural landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will also play a role here. Marcel Bradtmöller has been a research assistant at the University of Rostock since 2017. As an expert on the settlement sites of post-glacial hunter-gatherers in the southern Baltic Sea region, his current research includes the Seascape project. In this joint project, the so-called Blinkerwall off the coast of Rerik is being investigated underwater archaeologically. The almost one-kilometre-long stone structure is presumably the oldest building in Northern Europe and today lies around 21 meters below sea level. The rampart was probably used to hunt reindeer in the treeless landscape after the last ice age. The lecture will take place in the open meeting place at the Campus der Generationen, Schwaan, Schillerstr. 1a. Tickets are available at the box office at a price of €7. Admission is from 6.30 pm.
