North Friesland today: After the death of his father-in-law, Hauke Haien, an ambitious outsider who lives in harmony with nature, takes on two important roles in coastal protection. He becomes dyke count and director of coastal protection. But his warnings about the dramatic effects of climate change are dismissed as hysteria, and only Hauke's wife Elke supports him. Prudently and cleverly, she manages to make Hauke's voice heard and appease his opponents. Hauke's approaches meet with a positive response from politicians. They promise to support him, but it soon becomes known that his plans go much further than he himself has previously announced: Once the first line of dykes has been dismantled, a second line will have to be flooded, which would mean most of the region's inhabitants losing their homes. He finds no sympathy for this undertaking among his fellow citizens; nobody wants to give up land that their ancestors have wrested from the sea over the centuries. The impending catastrophe can no longer be averted.
